Exterior siding is applied over the wall sheathing. It adds protection against weather, and also gives the wall its final appearance. Beside beauty and appearance, costs of siding material, installation, and maintenance should be taken into consideration when selecting the right type of siding.

National Contractors installs all types of siding on new and existing buildings.

Vinyl Siding

Vinyl siding is the most popular choice of exterior cladding in the USA. It is made of a PVC plastic, and it comes in a variety of color, textures, and styles. Vinyl siding is resistant to impact, durable, easy to install and maintain. The color goes all the way through each panel, so vinyl won't show scratches like painted surfaces. It is important to remember, however, that vinyl siding must be installed over a weather resistant barrier system that includes a continuous weather resistant material like Tyvek, and a properly installed flashing around all penetrations.

Vinyl siding can be easily applied over old, existing cladding. This type of project requires a fanfold siding underlayment or insulation (like GreenGuard) to smooth the wall surface - with additional thermal resistance as an extra bonus.

Cedar Siding

Cedar siding is available in a range of designs and grades. Its natural beauty and durability is valued by builders and homeowners. Cedar is a wood with a natural decay resistance and easily accepts a wide range of finishes. Bevel, tongue & grove, lap, and board and batten are among the most popular cedar sidings.

Visit Western Red Cedar Lumber Association for more information.

Fiber Cement Siding

Fiber cement siding looks as warm and inviting as wood siding. It has all the advantages of wood, but also is tough, flexible, will not rot or buckle, is immune to water, snow, and termites. Fiber cement siding is heavy and has to be nailed through to the studs. The basic composition of fiber cement siding is portland cement, sand, and cellulose fiber. Manufacturers guarantee the siding for 50 years against warping, buckling, or swelling. It comes in a variety of finishes, including cedar, smooth, beaded cedar, and beaded smooth.

National Contractors installs James Hardie Fiber Cement Siding, available also in factory applied, baked-on standard or stained colors. These high performance color treatments are guaranteed up to 15 years.
